Short Bio:
Derek F. Wong is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer and Information Science at the University of Macau and the Interim Associate Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology. He leads the Natural Language Processing & Portuguese-Chinese Machine Translation Laboratory (NLP2CT Lab) and received his Ph.D. from Tsinghua University. His primary research interests include neural machine translation and natural language processing.
Dr. Wong has led 18 funded research projects, including research grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and the joint research projects of NSFC-FDCT and MOST-FDCT. He has co-authored over 80 research papers in natural language processing and machine translation, published in top-tier international venues such as IEEE/ACM TASLP, ACL, ICLR, NeurIPS, AAAI, ICJAI, EMNLP, NAACL, and COLING.
In 2012 and 2022, Dr. Wong received the Second-class Prize in the Science and Technology Progress Award category and the Second-class Prize in Technological Invention Award of the Macao Science and Technology Award, respectively. He is an active member of his professional community, serving as a member of the Board of Directors and Machine Translation Steering Committee member of the Chinese Information Processing Society of China (CIPS), as well as a Members-at-Large of the Asian Federation of Natural Language Processing (AFNLP). He is also an Associate Editor of ACM Transactions on Asian and Low-Resource Language Information Processing (TALLIP), an Editorial Board member of the Springer Machine Translation journal, and Elsevier Natural Language Processing.
Dr. Wong has served as Program Co-Chair, Senior Area Co-Chair, Area Co-Chair, and PC Member for many important conferences, including ACL, EMNLP, ICML, ICLR, NeurIPS, AAAI, IJCAI, MT Summit, CWMT, NLPCC, among others.
