Value of Innovation and Entrepreneurship

It is well known that innovation for the development of any enterprises and countries is of crucial importance. A country without innovation means no sustainable development momentum, whereas an enterprise without innovation has no core competitive advantage. Innovation is at the soul of development for a nation. In order to respond to the change of economic model, in the Two Sessions in 2015, Premier Li Keqiang in the “Government Work Report” pointed out that the “mass entrepreneurship and innovation” is to be one of the “twin engines” to continue the economic growth. The Mainland government and the Macao SAR government have introduced various policies to encourage young people to innovate and start their own businesses. According to Zhaopin survey data, the proportion of university student entrepreneurs in the Mainland has reached 6.3% in 2015, which is almost double as compared to 3.2% in 2014. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology also reported a very high proportion of students choose to start their own businesses rather than to work in companies. Entrepreneurship has become the third choice for Mainland and Hong Kong students, besides working in large enterprises and further study.

In this Talk, Prof. Yen will share with the students several national and overseas cases where innovation shows significant impact on their business, as well as the best example in successful city economic transformation – Pittsburgh’s Rebirth. At the same time, Prof. Yen will share the concept of entrepreneurship incubation at top universities and how they manage and match the social resources with innovations, protect and evaluate them. Finally, we will discuss how the University of Macau will create a platform for professors and students who have a dream of innovation and entrepreneurship.

Prof. Jerome Yen is currently the Head of Innovation Centre and Distinguished Professor of Business Information Systems. Before joining the University of Macau, he was the director of internet finance at the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute. He has also worked in the University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Chinese University of Hong Kong with profound research experience in management information systems, finance, commerce, risk management and internet finance, especially in finance supermarket and its business model and technologies. Besides, Prof. Yen has also held the position of senior vice president and deputy chief risk officer in a company of Forbes 500 and Fortune 500.
